2021-03-16 · Abstract. Along with the trend toward globalization, communication across cultural and national boundaries has a significant effect on business. The Dutch management researcher Geert Hofstede’s work of culture dimensions is regarded as an approach to measure inter-cultural differences to business for scholars and practitioners.

These are called dimensions of culture. Each of them has been expressed on a scale that runs roughly from 0 to 100. The Hofstede model of national culture consists of six dimensions. The cultural dimensions represent independent preferences for one state of affairs over another that distinguish countries (rather than individuals) from each other. The country scores on the dimensions are relative, in that we are all human and simultaneously we are all unique. In other words, culture can only be used meaningfully by comparison.

They include power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance index and long term orientation. For expatriate employees to communicate effectively across cultures, they undergo cultural orientation programs before they begin their foreign assignments. When Hofstede’s first results were criticized by Asian scholars, he added time orientation as a fifth dimension thereby raising doubts about whether the typology itself was exhaustive. A separate research project into organizational culture differences, conducted by Geert's institute IRIC (Institute for Research on Intercultural Ccoperation) across 20 organizational units in Denmark and the Netherlands in the 1980s, identified six independent dimensions of practices: process-oriented versus results-oriented, job-oriented The cultural dimensions model of Geert Hofstede is a framework that describes five sorts (dimensions) of differences / value perspectives between national cultures: Power distance (the degree of inequality among people which the population of a country considers as normal)
